If ever an album was so perfectly named it’s this one.

David Phelps is probably best known for his years with the Gaither Vocal Band, a group that has not only had an incredible amount of songs to come from their albums, but also a group that has launched a number of great singers into solo careers (Jonathan Pierce, Mark Lowry, Steve Green, Larnelle Harris, Michael English, etc.).  When David was introduced into the group, the focus immediately went to his powerful tenor voice and his talent was all the introduction he needed.  And, with the release of his newest project we hear David in a whole new way.

This album is not about the songs – you’ve probably heard them all before.  This album is not about the music – although the sweeping orchestration arrangement on many songs are beautiful.  This album is about The Voice.

For his newest CD, David chose classic songs that are special to many.  Songs like “I Want to Know What Love Is” and “Unchained Melody”, although very familiar, are given new life with David’s powerhouse vocals.  Over and over on this record that is what grabs you – The Voice.  Some of the highlights for me are the aforementioned “I Want to Know What Love Is”, the fourth track “Nessun Dorma” (which brings to mind some of the songs made popular by singer Josh Groban), and the haunting piano-driven “Moonlight”.

Although this is a new sound for David – both musically and lyrically – I would very highly recommend this CD to anyone, whether new fan or old.  Not for the songs, not for the music, but for The Voice.
