You Move Me
"You Move Me" is a song that I heard
for the first time last summer. I was writing with my dear friend Gordon Kennedy
and he said, "Hey let me play you a song that Pierce Pettis and I wrote
together," and I think that I cried right there. I think I still cry every
time I hear this song, because it just really nailed me. I think I'm a person
that doesn't have a lot of courage and so most of the time God has to be the one
to move me, and I guess that's just what this song is about.
Blind Side
This snappy little tune, "Blind Side," is a song that I wrote with
Wayne Kirkpatrick. I think as Christians, a lot of times when we hit a plateau
we get to where we're just sort of grooving along, cruising through life and we
get pretty comfortable, we feel like we have all of our bases covered. And then
sure enough, Satan just finds a way to come right around and knock our feet
right out from under us. I guess to follow in the line of that scripture,
"Take heed, ye who think you stand, lest you should fall" It's just
sort of a friendly little reminder to keep your eyes open.
Body and Soul
"Body And Soul" is a song that I wrote with Chris Eaton and Wayne
Kirkpatrick. I think that all of us have an experience or have been through an
experience which has been pretty painful, and oftentimes healing doesn't happen
just overnight. But I think the great hope that all of us have, no matter what
our specific circumstances are, is that we can know with assurance that God will
bring healing into our lives. I dedicated this song to the kids at Big Oak
Ranch-a ranch in Alabama for orphaned, abused, neglected or homeless children.
All Kinds of People
"All Kinds Of People" is a song that was really fun for me to get
to do on this record because as far as the production, it's really different.
I've never really done a song like this before. Lyrically, I think it's really
fun, it's real catchy, it's easy to remember and sing along. But I think there's
also a great message in this, in that a lot of us as adults are the way we are
because of what we learned as we were growing up. I think it's a song that
really challenges us, no matter where we are in life, to become better people.
Crooked Man
"Crooked Man," what can I say about this song except that I love
it! It was so much fun to sing, I had a blast, it's a great story, a great
little moral lesson in there for all of us... And, just a
lot of fun.
Spinning Like a Wheel
"Spinning Like A Wheel," this is very simply and plainly just a
beautiful love song. It's just a song that talks about that euphoric feeling
that we all have when we're first falling in love, and if you haven't been in
that place before, you will be I'm sure at some point in your life and it will
be exhilarating. And if you've been there, it's probably one of the sweetest
memories of your life.
Hundreds of Tears
This song spoke to me on a really deep level the first time I heard it
because I think at some point in our lives we've all been in a dark place and
wondered if we were going to find our way out of it. And the great thing is that
as a Christian, or really whether you're a Christian or not, God is constantly
pursuing you and wanting to bring you out of that dark place, and bring you into
a better place where you can really begin to experience a better life.
Send a Message
The very first time I heard this song, two of my best friends, Jeff and
Gayla Borders, had this little demo that they had made together and all they had
was the music and the title and they were just singing baby words, like "la
la la" kind of things, and the lyric for this song took forever. But in the
final hour Amy Grant stepped in and very graciously agreed to take time out of
her busy schedule and help us finish this lyric. And the end result is
everything, absolutely everything, that I hoped it would be.
I Will Follow
"I Will Follow" is a song that has been around for several years.
Every time we've sat down to consider songs for a record I have always brought
this one to the table but the time never really seemed right to record it before
now, so I'm just ecstatic to have it on this record.
Lonely River
"Lonely River" is a song that was written by Wayne Kirkpatrick and
Michael W. Smith.
I think that for several years I have felt fairly
certain about the course that my life was taking, but I think for all of us,
whether we're certain or not, sometimes it can just feel really lonely. This is
just a sweet song that talks about that and just says I think very simply, no
matter where you are, you are never alone. God is there in every moment.
Love Profound
"Love Profound" is a song that I'm very excited about because I
have the honor on this record of having Alison Krauss and Union Station provide
the track for this song, which was just a thrill. These guys are such brilliant
musicians. Alison's sweet little angelic voice doing background vocals and her
viola parts, I think made this song what it is. It's just a sweet little love
song for my love, J.D.
